Mission Overview
Against the Odds is the dramatic opening mission of 007 First Light, developed by IO Interactive and released on May 26, 2026. Set in the frozen wilderness of Iceland, this prologue introduces you to James Bond as a Naval Air Crewman recruit participating in an elite selection exercise that quickly spirals into a life-or-death extraction scenario. The mission serves as both narrative introduction and comprehensive tutorial, teaching core stealth, combat, and traversal mechanics while establishing the tone for the entire campaign.
The mission unfolds across three distinct environmental zones: the initial forest approach through snow-covered Icelandic pines near the coastline, the enemy compound with its interconnected research buildings, guard posts, and underground facilities, and the climactic escape sequence along a treacherous mountain ridge culminating in an antenna tower extraction. Each zone presents unique challenges requiring different tactical approaches, making this mission an essential foundation for the varied gameplay throughout your journey as a 00 agent.

Key Objectives
Your primary objectives in this mission are multi-layered and build upon each other as the situation escalates:
Complete objectives:
- Locate and retrieve the antidote from the enemy research facility — The compound houses a biological weapon antidote that must be secured before hostile forces can move it. The antidote is stored in a refrigerated container within the central laboratory building, protected by keycard access.
- Rescue hostages held in the eastern barracks building — Three MI6 operatives were captured during a previous reconnaissance mission. They are being held separately in individual cells on the upper floor of the barracks. Time is critical as their captors have begun interrogation procedures.
- Disable the communication array to prevent reinforcements — A large antenna structure at the northern edge of the compound allows the enemy to coordinate with external forces. Destroying or disabling it prevents additional hostiles from arriving during your extraction.
- Reach the extraction point at the southern antenna tower — After completing primary objectives, you must traverse the exposed mountain ridge to reach the designated extraction zone where a helicopter will extract you and any rescued personnel.
Stealth Approach Tips
The forest approach section teaches fundamental stealth mechanics through practical application. Your adventure begins at the forest perimeter where you receive your initial briefing from Greenway, your handler for this operation. Pay close attention to the on-screen prompts as they introduce the Instinct system (activated by pressing R3/Right Stick), which highlights nearby enemies, interactive objects, and points of interest through walls and obstacles for a limited duration.
Snow mechanics are critical in this opening section. Moving through deep snow drifts generates significant noise that alerts nearby guards within a substantial radius. Stick to packed snow paths created by patrol routes, and use the dense pine tree cover for concealment when moving between safe zones. Crouching reduces your noise footprint considerably and should be your default movement state in outdoor areas. The Q Lens (activated by pressing Up on D-Pad) can reveal footprints in fresh snow, helping you track both enemy positions and identify your own trail for backtracking if needed.
As you approach the compound perimeter, you will encounter your first real stealth challenge: a guard patrol with overlapping sightlines covering the main gate approach. The key here is patience and observation. Use elevated positions on rocky outcrops to study patrol patterns before committing to any path. Guards follow predictable 45-second loops with approximately 8-second gaps where sightlines do not overlap. Note these windows carefully. You can use environmental distractions such as throwing rocks (hold Square/X to aim, release to throw) or activating distant noise triggers to lure guards away from their posts permanently.
When positioned correctly behind an unaware enemy, execute a silent takedown by approaching and pressing Circle/B. The animation contextually adapts based on your position relative to the guard — from behind results in a chokehold, from the side produces a neck snap, and from above while hanging from a ledge triggers a brutal pull-down elimination. All takedowns in this mission are non-lethal by default unless you choose lethal variants, which affects challenge completion requirements later.

Combat Tips
Inside the main compound buildings, the mission shifts to interior stealth with more complex guard configurations. Guards operate in pairs connected by radio communication, meaning eliminating one guard alerts his partner within 3-5 seconds unless you act quickly. Prioritize identifying and neutralizing radio operators first — they wear distinct headsets and typically station themselves near windows overlooking patrol areas. Alternatively, time your eliminations so both guards are simultaneously incapacitated using thrown objects or environmental hazards.
The compound features multiple vertical layers connected by staircases, elevator shafts, and external scaffolding. Do not hesitate to use ziplines (approach and press X/A to ride), ventilation shafts (crouch and enter grates), or climbing surfaces (press X/A near marked walls) to bypass ground-level patrols entirely. Verticality is your greatest advantage in this environment — guards rarely look up, making ceiling ducts and overhead walkways essentially safe transit corridors.
If stealth fails and combat becomes necessary, remember that you begin this mission with only a basic sidearm and limited ammunition. Use cover extensively (press O/B near cover objects to enter cover mode), and aim for headshots which provide instant takedowns on standard enemies. The combat difficulty scales significantly if you trigger an alarm — reinforcements arrive in waves of 2-4 soldiers from the eastern barracks, so resetting to a previous save is often faster than fighting through an alerted state.

Extraction Sequence
The climactic escape sequence takes you across an exposed mountain face toward the southern antenna tower. This section emphasizes the traversal mechanics you have been building throughout the mission. Traverse horizontal pipes (hold X/A along pipes), swing across gaps using your grapple hook (aim at anchor points and press X/A), execute wall-runs along inclined surfaces (run toward walls and press X/A), and perform dramatic leaps between platforms. The game provides cinematic camera angles during these sequences, so focus on following the on-screen directional indicators while maintaining forward momentum.
The final obstacle involves triggering a controlled avalanche using explosive charges placed at strategic points along the ridge. This creates both your escape route and a barrier against pursuing enemies. Time your descent carefully — you must stay ahead of the cascading snow while maintaining speed toward the extraction helicopter landing pad below. Greenway provides covering fire from the helicopter during this sequence, so trust his support and focus purely on reaching the landing zone without stopping. Missing a jump or losing momentum here can be fatal as the avalanche will catch slow runners.
At the antenna tower base, board the helicopter to complete the mission. If you rescued all three hostages, they will already be aboard. The debriefing scene establishes Bond's official recruitment into the 00 program and sets up the next mission at MI6 headquarters in London. Your performance metrics — completion time, detection count, eliminations, and collectibles found — are displayed and recorded for future reference.

Collectibles Locations
There are 5 collectibles hidden throughout this mission, consisting of 3 Intel Documents, 1 Playing Card, and 1 Memento. Finding all of them contributes to the Completionist challenge and provides lore about the enemy organization operating in Iceland:

Satellite part collectible
Collectible locations:
- Intel Document #1 — Located in the guard shack at the forest edge, inside a desk drawer. Contains patrol schedules revealing shift change times useful for planning your approach.
- Intel Document #2 — Found in the laboratory basement, on a table near the antidote storage unit. Details the biological weapon research program and its intended targets.
- Playing Card (Ace of Spades) — Hidden under a supply crate in the western warehouse. Part of a collectible card set spanning all missions.
- Memento (Greenway's Dog Tag) — Located in the observation tower overlooking the compound center. Requires careful navigation along the exterior catwalk to reach. Provides backstory on your handler's military service.
- Intel Document #3 — Inside the hostage cell area, on the interrogator's desk. Contains notes about MI6 operations that reveal how deeply the enemy has penetrated Western intelligence networks.
Challenge Tips
This mission contains 9 optional challenges for players seeking additional objectives and replay value. Challenges can be completed across multiple playthroughs and are tracked cumulatively:
Available challenges:
- Pacifist — Complete the entire mission without firing any weapon or using lethal takedowns. Non-lethal takedowns and environmental knockouts are permitted. Best attempted after learning guard layouts on a first playthrough.
- Ghost — Remain completely undetected throughout the mission. No yellow or red detection bars may appear at any point. Requires memorizing patrol patterns and using exclusively vertical routes through the compound.
- No Help Needed — Complete without calling in Greenway for support during the extraction sequence. Makes the final chase significantly harder as you must deal with pursuing enemies yourself.
- Full of Surprises — Execute 3 environmental takedowns using objects like falling icicles, electrical panels, or heavy crate drops. Look for environmental interaction prompts near guard positions.
- Assault — Neutralize at least 10 enemies using direct combat methods including firearms, melee attacks, and explosive barrels. Easier than it sounds since alerted enemies count toward this total.
- High Ground — Eliminate at least 5 enemies from elevated positions including rooftops, ledges, and upper walkways. The compound architecture makes this very achievable with proper positioning.
- 00 to Become — Perform at least 7 total takedowns (lethal or non-lethal) throughout the mission. Nearly impossible to miss unless you ghost-run the entire compound.
- Scenic Route — Find and follow the hidden mountain path during extraction instead of the main route. The path begins at a collapsed rock formation east of the standard route and features unique dialogue from Greenway.
- Completionist — Discover all secret areas, find every collectible, and complete all other challenges in a single playthrough. The ultimate test of mastery for this mission.
For the Ghost challenge, spend 2-3 minutes observing the compound from the observation tower before entering. The elevated vantage point reveals every patrol route, camera position, and blind spot. Only one infiltration path allows true ghost completion — entering through the western drainage grate, moving through the basement maintenance tunnels, and using the ventilation system to reach each objective vertically. Any ground-floor entry forces at least one detection event.
The extraction sequence cannot be replayed in Free Roam mode, meaning all extraction-phase challenges (No Help Needed, Scenic Route) must be completed during story progression. Plan accordingly and consider saving before triggering the avalanche if you want to attempt multiple extraction approaches.
