Mission Overview

The Heart of the Matter returns you to MI6 headquarters for a critical equipment acquisition mission that introduces the Q Lens hacking device — one of the most versatile tools in your entire arsenal. This mission takes place primarily within the Q Branch laboratory complex, where you must complete a series of technical challenges to prove your competence with advanced spy technology before Q will authorize release of field-ready gadgets. The mission runs approximately 12-15 minutes and combines puzzle-solving, environmental navigation, and light stealth elements.

Unlike your previous visit to Q Branch which was purely narrative, this mission grants full access to the laboratory's testing areas, prototype vaults, and simulation chambers. The facility is divided into four distinct zones: the main workshop where standard gadgets are maintained, the secure research wing where experimental technology is developed, the simulation chamber where gadget effectiveness is tested against AI opponents, and the prototype vault where completed devices await field authorization. Each zone presents unique challenges requiring different approaches.

Key Objectives

Mission objectives:

  • Complete the Q Lens calibration sequence in the main workshop — Interact with five calibration targets distributed throughout the workshop area to sync the device with your neural interface. Each target requires a different activation method teaching various Q Lens functions.
  • Pass the encryption bypass test in the secure research wing — Hack three progressively difficult electronic locks within time limits. Success demonstrates proficiency with the Q Lens hacking module that will be essential for future missions.
  • Complete the gadget effectiveness simulation — Use prototype gadgets (EMP device, tranquilizer dart, audio decoy) to neutralize simulated targets in a controlled environment without triggering alarms.
  • Retrieve the authorized Q Lens from the prototype vault — The final chamber contains your fully calibrated and field-ready Q Lens device along with documentation on its capabilities and limitations.

Q Lens Calibration Sequence

The Q Lens is the centerpiece gadget of 007 First Light, serving as your primary reconnaissance, analysis, and interaction tool throughout the entire campaign. Before it can be deployed in the field, you must complete a calibration sequence that teaches each of its core functions while simultaneously syncing the device to your personal biometric profile. The calibration process takes place across five stations in the main workshop, each teaching a specific capability.

Calibration stations:

  • Analysis Mode (Station 1) — Point the Q Lens at a marked object and hold R2/RT to scan it. The device reveals material composition, structural integrity, and interactive potential. This mode identifies hackable electronics, breakable surfaces, and collectible items throughout all missions.
  • Instinct Vision (Station 2) — Activate Instinct by pressing R3 while the Q Lens is active. Enemies and points of interest glow through walls for 10 seconds, revealing patrol routes and hidden objects. This is your primary recon tool and has a 30-second cooldown between uses.
  • Hacking Interface (Station 3) — Approach an electronic lock or terminal and press Triangle/Y to initiate hacking. A mini-game appears where you must match frequency patterns by rotating the analog stick. Difficulty scales with security level of the target system.
  • Tagging System (Station 4) — While in Analysis Mode, press R1/RB to tag an enemy or object. Tagged targets remain visible through walls even when Instinct is not active. You can maintain up to 5 simultaneous tags, making coordinated takedowns significantly easier.
  • Environmental Scan (Station 5) — Hold L2/LT to enter wide-area scan mode. This reveals all interactive elements in your immediate vicinity including loot containers, escape routes, and environmental hazards. Essential for thorough exploration of mission areas.

Encryption Bypass Test

The secure research wing contains three locked doors representing increasing levels of encryption difficulty. Each door must be opened using the Q Lens hacking mini-game, and failure resets progress on that specific door. The three tiers are: Basic Encryption (consumer-grade locks, 3-second solve window), Military Encryption (facility-grade systems, 8-second solve window with rotating patterns), and Quantum Encryption (experimental systems, 15-second solve window with anti-tamper countermeasures).

The hacking mini-game mechanics require matching your input frequency to the target lock frequency displayed on screen. Use the left analog stick to rotate your frequency dial while watching the waveform alignment indicator. When waveforms align perfectly, press X/A to confirm the match. Higher encryption levels add complications: rotating patterns that shift the target frequency, noise interference that temporarily obscures the display, and countermeasures that reset progress if you move too slowly. Practice on the basic lock before attempting military and quantum tiers.

Successfully completing all three encryption tests unlocks the Advanced Hacking perk which reduces hacking mini-game difficulty by 20% for all future missions. This perk is extremely valuable as later missions feature quantum-encrypted systems that are nearly impossible to crack without this bonus. If you struggle with any tier, ask Q for hints — he provides useful tips without penalizing your score.

Gadget Effectiveness Simulation

The simulation chamber places you in a mock infiltration scenario where you must use three prototype gadgets to reach the extraction point without triggering more than one alarm. This test evaluates your ability to integrate gadget usage into natural gameplay rather than treating tools as separate from core mechanics. The simulation features 6 guard dummies with realistic patrol AI and 3 camera positions covering key corridors.

Required gadget demonstrations:

  • EMP Device — Use the EMP (selected via D-Pad Left) to temporarily disable the security camera covering the main corridor. The effect lasts 30 seconds during which you can pass safely. Note that using EMP near guards triggers their suspicion as they notice the equipment malfunction.
  • Tranquilizer Dart — Fire a tranquilizer round (selected via D-Pad Right) at the patrolling guard in the eastern room. The target falls unconscious for approximately 60 seconds, creating a window to pass. Tranquilized guards do not count as detections unless another guard discovers the body.
  • Audio Decoy — Place an audio decoy (selected via D-Pad Down) near the western door to lure the stationary guard away from his post. The decoy plays recorded footsteps for 20 seconds, drawing the guard's investigation to that location while you slip past the now-uncovered doorway.

Stealth Approach Tips

While Q Branch is a friendly environment, certain areas remain restricted and unauthorized entry triggers automated security responses. The laboratory operates on a clearance system — your initial badge grants access to public areas only, and each successful test upgrades your clearance level incrementally. Attempting to enter restricted zones before earning appropriate clearance results in being escorted out by automated security drones, which counts as a failed attempt for challenge purposes.

Use the Q Lens extensively throughout this mission even before full calibration — partial functionality allows basic analysis and tagging that helps identify optimal paths through each zone. Environmental scanning reveals ventilation shafts, maintenance corridors, and service ducts that provide alternative routes around security checkpoints. Many players rush through this mission focusing only on objectives, but thorough exploration reveals background details about other gadgets under development that foreshadow future unlocks.

Collectibles Locations

This mission contains 4 collectibles hidden within the Q Branch facility:

Collectible locations:

  • Intel Document #1 — Located in the main workshop, inside Q's personal notebook on his workbench. Contains schematics for the Q Lens showing its full capabilities beyond what Q tells you about directly.
