007 First Light Combat System — Complete Breakdown

Combat in 007 First Light is a designed, core pillar of the experience — not a failure state. The system blends melee combos, parry timing, environmental throws, firearm use (during Licence to Kill), and gadgets. Understanding each layer makes the difference between struggling and feeling like an unstoppable spy.

Attack Types and Responses

Yellow attack — Parry:

  • Timing: press Block just before the attack lands
  • Yellow = standard attack, fully parriable
  • After parry, you get a brief counter window
  • Chain parry into 2-3 hit combo for maximum damage

Red attack — Dodge:

  • Timing: press direction + Dodge before the attack lands
  • Red = unblockable — parrying fails and causes damage
  • Most unblockables come from heavy enemies or grab attacks
  • Side-dodge is safest; back-dodge sometimes clips into geometry

Orange attack — Block and Wait:

  • Orange = armored attack with longer windup
  • Block reduces damage but does not fully negate
  • Wait for opening after the block, then counter

Combo System

Queue up two-to-three attacks, then dodge out before enemy rotation catches you. Do not mash — the game punishes button mashing. Each combo should be intentional. Heavy enemies require more patience; lighter enemies allow longer combo chains.

Environmental Throws

Environmental objects (mugs, bottles, keyboards, books) are always available near NPC interactions. Throw them at enemies to stagger them — then perform a takedown. Throwing a depleted weapon at an enemy disarms them and lets you catch their gun.

Focus Mode in Combat

Hold R3 during Licence to Kill to activate Focus Mode. Time slows, crosshair tightens, and headshot accuracy increases dramatically. Focus Mode drains Instinct continuously. Use it for tough enemies and groups, not for every fight.

💡Agent Intel

Practice parry timing in TacSim — the combat tutorial is designed specifically for this. Getting parry timing consistent transforms the combat from frustrating to satisfying.
