Welcome to 007 First Light — Your Complete Starting Guide

007 First Light is IO Interactive's origin story for James Bond. You play as a 26-year-old Royal Navy recruit earning his place in MI6's elite Double-0 program. This guide covers everything you need to know before your first mission — mechanics, controls, gadgets, stealth, combat, and the Licence to Kill system.

Game Structure

The game has 17 chapters across 9 main missions and 8 interludes. Main missions are 1-3 hours each with full gameplay. Interludes are shorter (15-45 minutes) and mostly story-driven. The full campaign takes 15-25 hours. After the credits, TacSim mode provides additional challenge replayability.

The Four Pillars of Gameplay

Spycraft: social deception, dialogue bluffing, and cover identity maintenance

  • Stealth: silent movement, environmental awareness, and pattern recognition
  • Combat: melee combos, firearms, and environmental kills
  • Gadgets: Q tools, distraction devices, and hacking

Controls — Stealth and Movement

Move: WASD / Left Stick

  • Sprint: Shift / L3
  • Crouch: Ctrl / L3 (hold)
  • Q-Lens (scan): Alt / L1 / LB
  • Interact: E / X / A
  • Takedown: T / Y
  • Bluff: Q / Circle / B
  • Lure: V / D-Pad Up

Controls — Combat

Attack: F / Square / X

  • Block/Parry: S / Circle / B
  • Dodge: A or D + Space / X / A (direction)
  • Focus Mode (slow-mo): R3 / R3
  • Throw weapon: G
  • Gadgets (during combat): Alt + ability / L1 + gadget button

The Licence to Kill System

Bond cannot draw weapons at will. Licence to Kill activates automatically when enemies are actively shooting at you. A red notification appears at the top of the screen. Only then are firearms available. During standard exploration, social stealth, and close-quarters fights, you fight with fists and gadgets only.

Q-Lens and Q-Watch — Your Two Best Tools

Q-Lens (L1/LB/Alt) reveals enemies and objects through walls in a wireframe overlay. Q-Watch runs in three modes: Scanning (radar), Profiling (enemy tags), and Threat Analytics (alarm readiness). Both are permanently equipped. Battery management is critical — do not leave them running constantly.

Gadget Loadout Basics

You start with 2 active gadget slots (a third unlocks later). Always-equip: Q-Lens and Q-Watch. Recommended early loadout: Dart Phone + Smoke Pod. These handle the most common stealth scenarios — forcing guards to move, and covering mistakes.

Stealth Basics

Stay in cover. Use Q-Lens before entering rooms. Eavesdrop on NPCs to earn Instinct and gather bluff topics. Takedown isolated enemies from behind. Never try to bluff a Watcher (marked with a white dot). If detected, do not panic — fight, contain, recover.

Combat Basics

Parry yellow attacks (timed), dodge red attacks (unblockable). Chain two-to-three hit combos then dodge out. Throw environmental objects to stagger. Use takedown on staggered enemies. During Licence to Kill: aim and shoot, use Focus Mode for precision. Throwing an empty weapon at an enemy disarms them and lets you pick up their gun.

Start on Intended difficulty. This is IO Interactive's recommended setting and the one the game was balanced around. Save Purist for a second playthrough when you know the levels.
