The Instinct Loop — The Core Stealth Cycle

007 First Light's stealth system runs on a deliberate resource loop. You earn Instinct by playing well — takedowns, eavesdropping, combat — and spend it to play even better through bluffing and luring. Understanding this loop is the difference between struggling through stealth sections and flowing through them effortlessly.

Earning Instinct: The Stealth Loop

Silent takedown from behind: full bar segment

  • Combat takedown (finisher): partial bar segment
  • Eavesdropping on one NPC conversation: small bar segment
  • Eavesdropping on a group conversation: larger bar segment
  • Completing a small objective (opening a door, hacking a terminal): small segment

Spending Instinct: The Three Costs

Bluff: High Instinct cost — only attempt when spotted or about to be

  • Lure: Medium Instinct cost — use to separate single targets
  • Focus Mode: Continuous small drain — use in combat, not for exploration

The Optimal Loop in Practice

Enter a room → Q-Lens scan → identify isolated guard → silent takedown → earn Instinct → use Lure on next guard → separate them → silent takedown → earn Instinct → repeat. This loop sustains itself indefinitely in well-populated areas. If you break the chain (alert everyone at once), you switch to combat and the loop restarts.

Instinct and Detection

If detected with no Instinct remaining, you cannot bluff or lure. Your options become: fight, flee, or die. This is why entering every high-stakes area with a full or near-full Instinct bar is critical.

💡Agent Intel

Watch for environmental eavesdropping opportunities in every mission. NPC conversations are everywhere — bars, offices, corridors, lobbies. A 5-second listen before entering any new zone gives you Instinct AND intel for potential bluff topics.
