Stealth vs Combat: The False Choice
The best answer to "stealth or combat?" in 007 First Light is: both. IO Interactive designed the game so that neither approach is the "wrong" answer. Stealth is rewarding, efficient, and often easier early on. Combat is satisfying, cinematic, and always viable. The game constantly transitions between both, and the Licence to Kill mechanic ensures that combat always feels earned rather than default.
When Stealth Is Better
Stealth shines in: early game (Chapters 1-5) where enemies deal heavy damage and your gadget toolkit is limited; tight corridors with multiple guards; social infiltration sections (nightclubs, hotel lobbies, gala events); Ghost challenge runs where no detection is allowed; situations where guards are clustered and picking them off one by one is safer than alerting everyone.
When Combat Is Better
Combat excels in: Licence to Kill zones where guards are already shooting; open-area encounters with few enemies; boss fights and set-piece sequences; situations where stealth has already failed and you need to recover quickly; aggressive hybrid approaches where you eliminate a guard silently and then fight through the remaining response.
The Hybrid Approach — IO Interactive's Intent
IO Interactive's cinematic director Martin Emborg described Bond as having "a lot more forward momentum" than Agent 47. The design intent is fluid switching between approaches. Scout an area with stealth, get spotted, fight your way out, recover and return to stealth. This improvisation loop is the heart of the 007 First Light experience.
Best hybrid loadout:
- Dart Phone — creates takedown opportunities without alerting others
- Smoke Pod — emergency cover when stealth breaks down
- Laser Strap — opens alternate routes to avoid fights entirely
- Shockwave Camera — stuns groups in combat without wasting ammo
The game tracks challenges separately for stealth and combat. To earn every achievement, you will need to play missions multiple times — once focusing purely on stealth, once going loud. Chapter Select makes this easy.
